The Lime Tree Brown Treacle Bread

Limetree Kenmare Brown Treacle Bread

We have been making this brown treacle bread at the Lime Tree for many years now.

The recipe is easy and quick – why not make it at home.

Ingredients

225grams /8ozs Plain Flour
225grams /8ozs Extra Course Wholemeal Flour
50grams /2ozs Jumbo Porridge Oats
50grams /2ozs Castor Sugar
1 Tsp Salt
3 Tsp Baking Powder
1 ½ Tsp Bread Soda
100mls Black Treacle
1 Fresh Egg
600mls Full Fat Milk
2 Handfuls Walnuts

Method

Heat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/350F
Grease and line with parchment a 2lb Loaf tin
In a large bowl, mix all the dry ingredients together
Whisk the Milk and Eggs together, and add the treacle, mixing well
Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the wet
Mix by hand, being careful not to over mix, as this will cause your bread to be tough. The mixture should be wet, and resemble a porridge like substance
Bake for 50 minutes – the cooked bread should sound hollow when tapped on the side
Turn onto a wire rack to cool
Serve with butter and the jam of your choice
